Presentation Feedback

I believe my group and I have made a great attempt to accomplish a project that should satisfy our clients' need. We as a group were all very happy with what we have produced and this was also evident through the rest of the classes' opinions and reactions based on our work. We've made a decent effort and I hope we can put smiles on our client's faces.

I think one of our huge pros were the fact that we went against the whole 'Slide Show' presentation idea and went for something more unique, aesthetical and presentable. After all, our client did request the project put on a website.

We also decided to scrap the whole ''lets all present'' idea and perhaps leave it down to two people to present. We believed that this shows a neat and tidy presentation. Simple, easy to understand and there's not a whole bunch of us standing in each others way looking lost.

We did get a few errors on the website that Russell picked up on however we have gone back and edited. Video might have been too long.... we didn't get the chance to show the whole thing due to time, but perhaps the whole 9 minutes is essential to our client's website.

Final Presentations

Wheel

I'm not too sure that the group achieved what was asked of them, or that at least is my view on it. I saw a lot of hard work put into the project but the end result wasn't what I expected. They got the truck all modelled up pretty good. The wheel? well it could have been a lot more prettier from my point of view. Some paint wouldn't hurt. They got the wheel working though. Well done for that part but they presented the wheel using a 'car' in Unreal Engine. What was the point of modelling the truck? Presentation wise, they were all over the place. At times they gave me the impression they didn't know who was talking when or who's going next. They were standing in each others way.

Marker

I was expecting these guys to top the rankings to be honest. But what really let them down was..... they went AGAINST THE BRIEF! My group and I were having a debate on whether or not our group should 'Fail' them just for not meeting the clients' expectations! I insisted we didn't fail them because I recognised the 'hard work' the group had put in. The designs were great. Very thoughtful. A lot of concepts and ideas were presented and I thought they actually did try really hard. Their video was a little dull. They had the light rushing through the marker going one way but couldn't get it going back. Presentation was a lot tidier. I felt everyone knew what they were doing.

Oculus

Overall the group presented very well. They immediately told us the significance of the project and what they were trying to achieve. The whole class was with them from start to finish. I was a little gutted through not getting a chance to use the Oculus glasses although thankfully the group showed the rest of the class for those who didn't get a shot the opportunity to see what they were missing out on. Everyone did their job and I felt like as a group they ran smoothly all semester.

Museum

Museum was interesting. Enjoyed the whole 'Tablet/Ipad' experience! The presentation was really well done from my point of view. The whole group explained their part perfectly. The downside was.... yes it's a museum so where are the artefacts? What was presented to me could have been a school. I'm not too sure what programs they were using but I would have preferred something with a lot more quality in terms of graphics. I also picked up on something a group member pointed out during the presentation which was; they were told to ''change plan'' during week 7 of the semester which was well into the project. Perhaps this was time wasted?

My Experience

New & Old

2015
2014

Our client specifically made clear that they wanted us to edit
on last year's efforts. One of these were the gradients path of
the Ropeway. As we see above, the 2014 image shows the
ropeway on a more flat and smooth terrain where as the
client wanted us to try and replicate the Jamison Valley
steepness.

Another area of improvement were the cables. Philip Hammon
made it clear that last years project lacked the realistic look of
cables on an aerial ropeway. I therefore made sure the
cables 'sacked' or 'bent' the cables along the way
when modelling in 3Ds Max.

Re-doing Towers and Cables

When exporting into Unreal Engine 4, I came across issues with scaling. According to my group members, the towers looked too small. I then placed a human built in UE4 next to the towers and gave it a sense of scale. It looked correct.

Connecting Towers & Modelling Cables

I originally wanted to Export from MAX to UE4 and place the towers at each one's location. I then figured this would be harder as it makes it almost impossible to add the cables. So I went back and added the cables and exported the models as one.

Sharing The Map

After almost a week of issues, I have finally been able to get the map from Lukas' computer onto mine to start importing the MAX Models.

Presentation Group 4 - Conflict

This week's presentation I would say had the most interesting topic where all students got involved. This is probably due to the fact that almost everyone had been involved whether it be in the past or present in some sort of a conflict where a number of parties have disagreements. The presentation got my group asking questions to one another whether we as a group have been experiencing any sort of conflicts over the semester and what our alternatives are to sort these issues. I honestly began thinking to myself in past situations where I was in an awkward like position.
I also found interesting how our class groups would deal with such a situation. Who has the last say? how far can we go to reach a decision?

Argument
disagreement

have given examples of conflicts in group work....... very detailed

  • change
  • clash of personalities
  • Poor leadership
  • Poor communication - nice example. Grabbing class' attention
  • Standards
  • Controlling emotions

Types of people causing conflict

  • ''my idea is better'' - example relating back to his group
  • drama queen
  • The never on time
  • The carry (does all the work)
  • ninja
explained how to avoid conflict

avoiding it does not get rid of it

given information on how to resolve it. Posted questions to ask yourself if you are causing conflict in your group.

good communication is the best way to resolve a conflict.... by listening, being straight and direct
put personal feelings aside

have talked about the positives and negatives

related the topic back to their project - Marker Project. Interesting to see how they as a group are able to deal with the matter.

like how they related the issue back to a previous class project where the whole class had taken part in. Hextic

Presentation Group 3 - Intellectual Property

As future designers, it is absolutely critical that we have some sort of basic knowledge on hot to make something your own...... Legally!
In todays day and age, with technology the best its ever been, losing a design or patent can be simply done by the click of a mouse button. Knowing the basics of Intellectual property can help protect my design. I find this information critical, for the world we live in is challenging is terms of design.
As a University student, I cant say I have designed something out in the real world for someone to illegally place his hands on, but as a student, I do know how frustrating it gets having another student 'steal' your work and make it theirs.
Intellectual Property is a Legal form of protection

protecting a product.
-Trademark
-patent
-copyright
-design

its importance - anyone can just copy you. lead to a decline in products. no new ideas.

giving good tips to other groups on how they could protect their design.
giving examples that relates to us students through previous uni work.
very annalytical.
giving real world examples of conflicts
explaining how it is possible to breach the legal rights of all protection examples
have identified how they relate Intellectual Property back to their main project (oculus)
interesting animation video

Aerial ropeway - not our design. Models are not ours. belong to Scenic world katoomba.

design - refers to features of shape eg, apple and Samsung

trademark - distinguish good a services

copyright - protects original protection of ideas but no idea itself

patent - right for any device, substance, method or process that is new and useful

Group Work (Aerial Ropeway)

The position of the relocated ropeway at Katoomba is known exactly from the remains visible at the top of the cliffs, of several tower foundations along the route, and of the loading system at Ruined Castle.

Cableway was supported on 8m high towers. There were 47 Towers over the 3.2km length.

Presentation Group 2 - Communication

This week's presentation group was done very well, although at times I felt they were repeating themselves. The presentation gave myself and my group some key points in which we as a team were lacking.
Personally I believe communication is a very important part of team work. I myself have experienced being part of a team in previous years whether it be high school or Uni where communication between fellow team members and myself was low and it can be at times very frustrating.

  • Clear definition of the topic (Communication)
  • Very interesting timeline showing the history of how people have communicated over time.
  • Have given some good examples of Positive & Negative impacts for different forms of communication.
  • Cheney model was well explained and very clear.
  • Explained the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Examples of how people communicate verbally and non-verbally.
  • Technology plays a major role in communication today, for example mobiles, Facebook, tattoos.
  • Very clear Images and Text. Easy to keep up with the slides and information.
  • Animation was interesting. Very detailed and easy to understand.

Presentation Group 1 - Planning

When dealing with a group or team, planning in my opinion is probably the most important aspect in achieving a successful outcome. The group presenting today gave me that little extra motivation needed. The way each of them spoke really grabbed my attention. I really felt as if they worked as a team and how they all really look out for one another during this class.

  • The group have given a descriptive explanation defining the topic.
  • Have explained the reason they need to plan as a group and why it is essential that all groups when working together must plan to move forward smoothly.
  • Have given a clear analysis of the steps taken in planning (identifying, exploring, selecting etc.)
  • The group have explained to the class on how they plan as a team. Ways in making sure they all stay on track as a group (using social media to share information eg. Facebook)
  • They work as a team. Looking out for each other along the way. (making sure that all group members have right programs installed)
  • Clear Images and text have grabbed my attention making the presentation more interesting.
  • Graphs were unclear with small font and made it difficult to read
  • Video was great! I think the whole class was amazed although some slides were a little too fast to read.
